Common questions
How do I add my property line?
Open the Lines tab and tap Import a file, or open a GPX, KML, KMZ or GeoJSON file from Files, Mail or Messages and choose Tractline. Your line shows in purple on the map, in the 3D view and on Status. To try it without a file, tap Add a test square around me.
Where do I get a file of my lines?
Your county's GIS or parcel viewer can often export a parcel outline as KML. You can also trace your lines in Google Earth and save them as KML, or record a track along a fence with a GPS app and share it as GPX. A line is only as good as the file it came from.
Why does it say "Not on mapped public land"?
You are outside every public land area in Tractline's data. That usually means private land, but the data leaves out some small parcels and road rights-of-way, so Tractline does not call it private.
Why does it say I am near a boundary instead of which side I am on?
Phone GPS is often off by 5 to 15 meters, and agency lines have their own error. When you are that close to a line, Tractline cannot tell which side you are on, so it says so. Look for posted boundary signs.
The walls in the 3D view point the wrong way.
Give the compass about 10 seconds after opening the 3D view, and keep it away from trucks, rifles and other metal. If it is still off, tap Align and line it up by your shadow or along a road or trail you are standing on. A message at the top says when the compass needs calibrating.
Does it work without a signal?
Yes. Boundaries, terrain, roads and trails are stored on your phone. A signal is only used to get app updates.
Where does it work?
North Carolina for now: public land statewide, with 3D terrain, roads and trails around the Triangle. Lines you import work anywhere.
How do I get the newest version?
Small updates arrive by themselves. To get one right away, open About and tap Check for updates.
Is this a survey?
No. Tractline is approximate. Posted boundary signs, official agency maps and a licensed survey decide where a line is. For anything that matters, like building or cutting near a line, get a licensed survey.
